Run price experiments

Test two or more prices of an offer: start a price experiment on the person's own offers and prices (their Stripe prices; on Trillion's own account, Trillion's plans), show each visitor or customer the same price every time, record payments and refunds, read which price brings in the most money per person shown it, settle the winner so everyone sees it, or stop it; also answers which offers one visitor is shown. Prices can also move by Jibran's geometric rules (ladder, controller, bracket): a ladder of prices a fixed ratio apart to test, a price that doubles with sales and eases with people who do not buy, or a bracketed search that closes on the highest price people accept

Every price shown, payment and refund is kept as a commercial event, so a funnel graph that names the experiment's funnel_id counts it at its stages and a settled experiment's winner becomes the price its node shows. An arm's price is read from the offer it names, never typed over it. Trillion's own plan prices are this tool run on the account that runs Trillion. A price rule says what the price should be; changing what customers are charged for an offer with a payment link goes through whoever sets that offer.

What it asks for

  • operation (Needed, one of): save starts or changes an experiment; assign shows one observer their price and keeps that they saw it; record keeps a payment or refund; results reads money per person shown each price; settle shows everyone the winner (the leading price when none is named); shown_offers lists the offers one observer sees. ladder previews a geometric price rule (its prices and what it says) without keeping anything; price_now says what a rule's price is now, from an experiment's results or from sales and reached handed in; next_round moves a running experiment to the prices its rule now says to test.
  • experiment_id (Optional, words): The experiment's id (save returns it).
  • label (Optional, words): save: what is being tested, in plain words.
  • surface (Optional, words): save: where the price is shown. On Trillion's own account, the place its pages quote it (paid-plan for the upgrade line, hosted-site for the publishing site).
  • optimizing_for (Optional, words): save: what the experiment should bring about, in words.
  • arms (Optional, list): save: the prices tested. Each names an offer of this account (offer_id, or price_id for a price on its payment service), whose own price is used; or gives id with amount_cents, currency and interval for a price sold elsewhere. weight (default 1) sets how many observers see it.
  • rule (Optional, details): save, ladder, price_now: a geometric price rule, the price moving by multiplication from what people did instead of by opinion. mode ladder: prices a factor ratio apart around start_cents (down_steps below, up_steps above), each next_round zooming in on the price that earned most per person. mode controller: the price starts at start_cents, doubles over sales_to_double sales, and each person who reached it and did not buy takes a little off, holding still at target_win_rate (a number between 0 and 1). mode bracket: the highest price someone accepted and the lowest price above it that was refused, the next price being the geometric middle between them. With a rule and no arms, save opens with the rule's prices.
  • funnel_id (Optional, words): save: the id of a funnel graph in the person's Funnels folder this experiment feeds.
  • node_ref (Optional, words): save: the node of that funnel whose price is tested.
  • observer (Optional, words): assign, record, shown_offers: who is shown the price (a visitor id, customer id or email).
  • moment (Optional, one of): record: what happened.
  • amount_cents (Optional, number): record: the amount paid or refunded.
  • currency (Optional, words):
  • event_id (Optional, words): record: the payment's own id, so a payment sent twice counts once.
  • arm (Optional, words): record: the arm paid for, when it is not the observer's own.
  • winner (Optional, words): settle: the arm everyone is shown from now on.
  • why (Optional, words): settle: why it won, in words.
  • sales (Optional, number): price_now: people who bought, when a rule is given without an experiment.
  • reached (Optional, number): price_now: people who reached the price, when a rule is given without an experiment.
